  1. Donny, as a TBI survivor I can identify with what you are saying. At times it is extremely hard for me to stay on task. My therapists noticed it during the rehab sessions. They referred me to my rehab doctor. He mentioned that some side effects of my TBI was something like ADD. He prescribed me with Adderall 20mg. It is a very small dose but it has helped me out a lot. I’m able to stay on task easier. Try it, maybe it works for you. Good luck brother!

  2. Hey Donny-

I have noticed this problem too– I keep watching TV instead of doing the focused or detailed tasks that I need to do…sometimes I avoid them for several weeks before I get started! UGH!

One thing I have used for years (because I used to deal with simple ADHD before my TBI) is to plan a nice little reward for myself.

So write it down if you need to– I promise myself after I do the hard task, then I can do something I want to do that is fun and interesting…I like chocolate, sitting in the sun, watching my favorite 30 minute show…

Just one idea, but it helps me sometimes.

Also, try making sure you get calm, quiet places to work if that helps.

I concentrate better outside in the sunshine…don’t know why unless vitamin D3 helps with brain attention.

Hope I didn’t write too much here dude!

    I am a wordy writer– hahahaha…LOL!

  3. Donny your memory has improved so much. You have been sleep deprived and in a lot of pain. I think it’s time for you to go back to Dr Shultz web site http://www.givebackla.com he has so many tools and work sheets that will help. In the past when you were going to his site it helped so much. And remember when your at work use your note pad and write notes. I need to do it to keep me focus.
I Love You ! We get your results today.

  4. Hello Donny-

By this date you have probably overcome your problem to focus on your workload. However, staying focused is a skill that you must learn and continually practice. I have listed 6 steps for increasing your productivity by increasing your ability to focus.

    1. Create and maintain an open item list that contains all of your commitments.
Your mind will wander less if you know that you have captured your commitments and that you are actively working on completing them.

    2. Remove distractions from your work environment.
    Clear your desk of distractions.
Shut your door to discourage interruptions.
Mute your phone, beeper and/or cell phone.
    Get a comfortable chair.

    3. Remove distractions from your computer.
Turn off the radio, Pandora, or your iPod.
Log out of your instant messaging software, Facebook, or your favorite internet site.
Mute your computer so that you will not hear when new messages arrive.

    4. Give yourself permission to focus on one activity.
Many of us feel guilty if we are not working one hundred miles an hour while multi-tasking but as we begin to see beneficial results from focused work, we will begin to feel less guilty and more satisfied. It may take some practice before you are able to completely focus on one activity. When other thoughts come up, simply notice the thoughts and then release them.

    5. Work for fifty focused minutes.
When the time period is up, finish your current task. It is more important that you complete the task than it is for you to adhere to the fifty minute guideline. As your ability to stay focused grows, gradually increase the length of your work period.

    6. Take a 5-10 minute break.
Move around. Do a few light stretches. Clear your mind. Don’t think about what you are working on. This break will allow you to recharge your battery so that you can fully focus during the work period.

Maybe too much info, but my selfcoaching-tip-stay-focused-at-work has helped through my depression due to my loss.

    Keep making us all think….:)

    Love ya,

    Patrick’s Mom
