Donny Winn | A video about my Traumatic Brain Injury from Hypoxia /Anoxia
On this video my mother and I talk about what happened and how I got my TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) from Hypoxia. Being an advocate for people with TBI’s is important to me because I have dealt with so much and can relate.

Donny, your story is so inspiring,i have had a devastating thing happen on june 8,2009.my 16 year old found my fiance hanging.he is now in intensive care, the doctors are saying he is going to be a vegetable, but they havent even done a brajn scan to see if theres any brain activity ,its only been 3 days and they have convinced his mom to take him off of everything,he is only 33 yrs old, hes in perfect physical shape. i have convinced her to make them do a scan before signing any papers,i want her to give it more time.im meeting her at the hospital at 9 in the morning and im going to show her your video and pray that they give him a chance to live. thank you so much if your mom has any advice for me please contact me at sunshinegurl222@yahoo.com
Hi Donny – I am Cherie – Shauns mom – ask some of the nurses and techs there if they remember Shaun – especially the nurse Ben and cna – Rosa… Casa hospital is an awesome place. His therapist was Tammy…
Shaun had a motorcycle accident October of 06 and has been on his journey of recovery. He came home to live with me January of 08. He is doing ok… not fast enough for him though – lol… as I suspect you too.
Shaun is non-ambulatory, but is not paralyzed – This week he took 51 steps in PT – he was in a harness – on a treadmill – very uncoordinated, but his brain is telling his feet what to do and that is awesome. He shakes so badly that that gets in the way.
What are you getting the baclofen pump for and is it helping? Shaun was on baclofen for quite awhile and we didn’t notice a difference though… most of the doctors say that his brain has to “re-wire” to get it to stop…
Well Donny – we hope you keep in touch… our email is cbwfi@aol.com – and Shauns website is http://www.whatfriendsdo.com/Shaun_Fabian – you can go there and sign in with the password (lower case) macandlulu. Do become one of his friends and you will get updates when I find the time to put them on, as I am his sole caregiver…
Oh – are you going to go to TLC??? If so – they will remember Shaun there too – lol… he wasn’t the quietest one there and wanted to go home – lol
Have a GREAT Friday… Keep the Faith… and hugs to your Mom – I know the journey she is going through too…
Did you have an accident or was it just the lack of oxygen from the what you took that one night???

Hi Donnie,
I’ve been an advocate for persons with Traumatic Brain Injury for 19 years, a friend of mine was depressed and distraught and shot himself in the head. He survived. He has not been able to live on his own since this happened in 1992. Although he received formal rehab and is ambulatory, he has severe short term memory issues and cannot care for himself.
After his formal rehab, the brain injury ACLF closed and I was called to come pick him up, there after I took care of this man and implemented one on one rehab so he could learn the basic ADL’s for daily living, this was for a term of five years.
I advocated for additional services for him and even appeared on the Sally Jesse Rahphael Show, but to no avail no other help came forward to assist him. Unfortunately his family are too wrapped up in themselves to attend to his care. I found him a group home that he has lived in for the past 13 yrs., and I am his brain injury advocate, power of attorney and friend to this day.
I have been working on a project to bring in funding to open group homes specifically for brain injured individuals who need a loving home, but do not have substantial financial assistance within their reach, only SSI or SSDI and a state stipend. I’m working on a website now, with a product that the public can purchase and a % of the profits will go to “Creative Living Environments”, homes for individuals with traumatic brain injury.
It is a daunting venture, I say to myself I must be out of my mind trying to do this………….and then I think, this can happen to anyone of us. Chances we take, accidents that occur and people trying to commit suicide to escape from their life only to create a worse scenario for their life when they realize they did not accomplish their suicide and end up with a brain injury.
I don’t know how far I’ll get, but I will sure try hard !!!!!! I’ve been called the “Relentless Advocate” !!!!!!!
Brain Injury is very hard on the individual who has sustained the injury, but I do think the loved ones who are going through all the changes with you are also traumatized, as I have been.
But, we continue to move forward with great faith and persistance don’t we? Just as you have, with a great support system !!!
Keep up the good work Donnie………and always be grateful as I’m sure you are for the simple gifts in life !
You Can Do It, Donnie !!!!
